Parallel Flange Channels
Parallel Flange Channels (PFCs), often referred to as C-sections due to their distinctive shape, are versatile structural steel members widely used in construction. They are commonly employed as supports for joists and can also serve as an alternative to traditional columns in certain applications, offering a strong and durable solution for load-bearing requirements.
One of the key advantages of PFCs lies in their parallel flange design. Unlike tapered sections, the consistent thickness of the flanges makes connections simpler and more efficient. Standard flat washers and fixings can be used without the need for specialised components, helping to streamline installation and reduce both time and cost on site.
In comparison, traditional rolled steel joists (RSJs) feature tapered flanges, which often require angled washers to achieve a proper fit when bolting. PFCs eliminate this complication, providing a more straightforward and practical option for many structural applications while maintaining excellent strength and long-term performance.
