Rolled Steel Angle - Unequal
Rolled Steel Angles – Unequal (RSA-u), often referred to simply as angle sections or L-sections, are formed with two legs of differing lengths. The “unequal” designation highlights this variation, making the section particularly useful in applications where one side needs to provide greater support or load-bearing capacity than the other.
These angles are frequently used in longer lengths as lintels, with the longer leg positioned vertically to maximise strength and improve load distribution. This configuration allows RSA-u sections to carry greater loads compared to equal angles in certain orientations. In addition to this, they are commonly cut into smaller pieces and drilled to create connection brackets or cleats, enabling beams and other members to be securely fixed together.
RSA-u sections are typically specified using a format such as 30 x 20 x 3 RSA. In this example, the first dimension (30mm) represents the longer leg, the second (20mm) the shorter leg, and the final figure (3mm) indicates the material thickness. This standard naming convention ensures clarity when selecting the appropriate section for structural and fabrication purposes.
