Square Hollow Sections
Square Hollow Sections (SHS), commonly referred to as box sections, are square-profile steel members formed as hollow tubes. They are frequently used as columns or vertical supports, often fitted with base and cap plates to allow for secure fixing at both ends. SHS can also be utilised in beam-to-column arrangements, where connections are made to either side of the section. While they are not as widely used as universal beams or columns, they are a popular choice in projects where both structural performance and visual appearance are important, thanks to their clean, modern lines.
There are two primary manufacturing methods for SHS: cold-formed and hot-finished. Cold-formed sections are produced by shaping flat steel sheets into a square profile and welding along the seam where the edges meet. In contrast, hot-finished sections are formed at high temperatures during the rolling process, resulting in a more uniform structure and consistent strength throughout the section.
SHS sizes are typically expressed in a format such as 20 x 20 x 2. In this example, the first two measurements (20mm x 20mm) represent the equal width and depth of the square profile, while the final figure (2mm) indicates the wall thickness. This standardised sizing makes it easy to specify the appropriate section for a wide range of structural and architectural applications.
